NDA upbeat, Soren dreads trust vote
Publish Date : 3/10/2005 2:01:00 PM   Source : Political News ExpressNewsline.com

The NDA cheered while UPA leaders projected long faces as the Supreme Court advanced Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren's trust vote to Friday.

Soon after the court order Wednesday, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders met at the residence of Janata Dal-United state president Inder Singh Namdhari to discuss their strategy in the assembly.

"It's a victory for democracy. The (Supreme Court) judgement indicates that the governor committed wrong by inviting Shibu Soren (to be chief minister). The governor should now resign," said BJP leader and former chief minister Arjun Munda here.

The court had pulled up Governor Syed Sibtey Razi for committing a "fraud" on the constitution by appointing Soren, chief of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Soren was earlier set to seek a trust vote March 15 in the 81-member assembly.

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) leaders were visibly shocked by the judgement and went in for closed-door meetings.

Two of the six ministers missing from Wednesday's cabinet meeting further unnerved the coalition.

The UPA had recommended its choice for the Anglo-Indian member to be nominated in the assembly, hoping that this would push Soren's chances.

Soren had claimed the support of 40 legislators. Anglo Indian member Alfred George De Rozario would have made his tally equal to that of the NDA.

UPA sources said Deputy Chief Minister Stephen Marandi had been given the task of tracing the missing ministers. Marandi hired a chartered aircraft for Patna to find them.

Kamlesh Kumar Singh, one of the two ministers, was reportedly unhappy being in the UPA.

The NDA's gameplan, sources said, was to convince four UPA legislators to stay away during voting.
