Authorities investigating the killings of family members of a Chicago federal judge say their probe continues despite the suicide of a likely suspect.
Police in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis say a man who shot himself in a van with Illinois license plates and no taillights during a routine traffic stop near a school Wednesday afternoon had evidence in the vehicle linking him to the Feb. 28 slayings of the mother and husband of U.S. District Court Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow.
Chicago Police Superintendent Phil Cline identified the man as Bart Ross, 58, the Chicago Sun-Times said.
"Until all the evidence has been examined we cannot discount any suspect in this case," James Finch of the Milwaukee FBI told a Thursday news conference.
The Chicago Tribune said the man left a suicide note including an admission he shot Lefkow's family members.The FBI refused to comment on reports the note also had details in the case that were not released to the public and .222 caliber shells were found in the van.
Three .222 caliber shell casings were found in the Lefkow home.
The note indicated a civil judgment by Lefkow in a medical-malpractice case had cost the man "his house, his job and family," a source told the newspaper.
