Cauvery Tribunal to give final order on February 5

After more than 16 years of its existence, the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) will pronounce its final award on February five on the inter-state dispute over sharing of the Cauvery waters among Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry.
Constituted on June 2, 1990, the Tribunal gave its interim award on June 25, 1991 under which Karnataka was to release 205 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water every year to Tamil Nadu.
Though there was constant friction between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the release of water, water shortage was often resolved by the bounty of monsoons.
The Tribunal headed by Justice N P Singh had completed the hearing in July last year and reserved its final order in the dispute.
Among the inter-state river water-sharing disputes in the country, the once concerning the Cauvery has perhaps been one of the oldest and very well documented, historically. The dispute dates back to at least 1892 and an amicable settlement among the riparian states has remained elusive.
