The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), controlled by leaders opposed to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Parkash Singh Badal, today described the Punjab election results as a "victory of the BJP".
"The results in Punjab show that there is no significant increase in Badal's own tally. Instead it is the BJP that has emerged as a winner and the Akali leader will now be more dependent on his ally for his own political survival," DSGMC leader Harvinder Singh Sarna said.
Sarna's party defeated Badal's SAD in the DSGMC elections last month for a second time in a row on an anti-BJP plank.
"We would like to caution the SAD against allowing any further saffronisation of Punjab and he should keep the RSS away from Sikh religious affairs," he said.
His comments came in the wake of the BJP winning a majority of the 23 seats it contested in the 117-constituency state.
In the 2002 Punjab vote, the saffron party could secure only three seats.
Badal's SAD controls the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which administers a number of historical gurdwaras and educational establishments and appoints Akal Takht Jathedar, the highest decision-maker at the seat of Sikh temporal authority.
