Cabinet approves purchasing of 2.5 lakh Electronic Voting Machines

The Union Cabinet today gave its 'go ahead' for the purchase of 2.5 lakh Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at the cost of Rs.8670 per unit.
The cost is (excluding of transportation, excise duty and sales tax.
At its meeting here today, the Cabinet also gave ex post facto approval for procurement of EVMs for general elections to the Legislative Assemblies in Manipur, Punjab and Uttranchal.
These EVMs will also be used later during Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
The Election Commission has been taking up the rationalization of polling stations from time to time and on the basis of feedback received from States, it felt the need for reducing the voter strength per polling station in order to ensure voter convenience and an orderly poll within the stipulated polling hours.
This has resulted in the increase of polling stations across the country and consequential requirement of about 2.5 lakh EVMs to cope up with the additional requirement.
