The longstanding debate over who built the five Pyramids of Giza in west Cairo has been rekindled following an official complaint by Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities chastising a Cairo school for teaching that the Jews built the world famous structures.
"It is well known that the ancient Egyptians built the Pyramids. They regarded these structures as a national project for ancient Egypt," Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities was quoted by 'Ynet' news portal as saying.
Hawass has filed an official complaint to the Egyptian Attorney General against a Cairo high school for teaching the students that it was the Israelites who built the pyramids.
A prominent figure in Egyptian cultural sphere and around the Arab world, Hawass criticised the school curriculum for "insisting that the Jews built the pyramids," the report said.
An earlier claim by former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin that Jews built the structures had evoked sharp criticism in Egypt.
"We built the pyramids," Begin had said at the National Museum in Cairo during an official visit.
The Egyptian Antiquities Authority, headed by Minister of Culture Farouk Hosny, announced yesterday that his country objects to a proposal from a group of American Rabbis to establish an international committee to look into renovation of Jewish sites in Egypt.
