Nimbus gets marketing rights for Doordarshan for India-WI matches
Publish Date : 1/25/2007 8:13:00 AM   Source : Sports News ExpressNewsline.com

The telecast row between Nimbus Communications and Prasar Bharti over the India-West Indies one-day series does not look to die down soon, with the Delhi High Court on Wednesday allowing the former to undertake the marketing rights of the telecast on Doordarshan.

While hearing an appeal, Justice Sanjay Kisan Kaul ordered the public broadcaster not to sell the feed to private DTH (Direct-to-Home) operators.

This comes after Prasar Bharti moved the court challenging its yesterday's order that Doordarshan would have to telecast the one-day series with a delay of seven minutes, saying it would be an injustice to the poor who cannot afford cable television.

While awarding the marketing rights, the court observed that Nimbus would generate far higher revenues by sale of the matches that will be telecast on DD, as compared to Prasar Bharti.

Nimbus was asked to deposit Rs 5.5 crore with Prasar Bharati as part of its 25 per cent share in advertisement revenues on its channel, after the production house claimed to generate revenues of Rs 22 crore through the sale of advertising during the matches on Doordrashan, as against Rs 4.26 crore claimed by the public broadcaster.

Lawyers representing Nimbus- the channel that holds the official telecast rights for both the series against West Indies and Sri Lanka, had asked for a 10-minute delay in telecasting the match on DD.

But the Delhi High Court directed DD to telecast the India-West Indies series with seven-minute delay.

Millions of Indians missed out on the live action of the opening India-West Indies tie in Nagpur on Sunday due to the telecast row.
