Attending the 58th Republic Day celebrations organised by the local Indian Consulate here, South African leaders have acknowledged the role of Indian community in influencing the social, business and educational life among South Africans.
"The local Indian community has made enormous contributions to the upliftment of the city and the province in all fields. On this day we remember the early Indians whose tremendous sacrifices added to the development of the region despite the discrimination suffered by them," said Durban Mayor Obed Mlaba.
Speaking on behalf of the provincial KZN Government, Minister of Finance, Zweli Khize, said they appreciated the co-operation with the National Small Industry corporation (NSIC) of India in promoting small business and industry.
"The National Small Industry Corporation of India will be be involved in the implementation of the strategy. There is excellent co-operation with the Government of India in all areas", he said.
Among other prominent South Africans who attended the function were former Cabinet Minister and leader of the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party, Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi; Dr Zweli Mkhize, KwaZulu-Natal Minister for Economic Affairs and Tourism; and former political activist Professor Fatima Meer.
