Three alleged gansters wanted in India for extortion and murder of a businessmen and a journalist are in police custody in South Africa and awaiting deportation, police said here today.
The trio, arrested after a six month investigation by the local police, have been identified as Joginder Singh, 24, Surender Kumar, 26, and Baljeet Singh, 26.
National police spokesperson Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said the three Indian nationals "will be extradited as soon as police officers from India arrive to receive them." Naidoo said the men, who are reported to be members of the notorious Surender Geong gang, arrived in South Africa in July last year from Mozambique on "false visas".
He said all three men are wanted in India for attempted extortion and the subsequent murder of businessman Narinder Arora and journalist Kishen Pehlawan in May last year.
The Surender Geong gang in December 2005 demanded nearly USD 80,000 from Arora and threatened to kill him if he did not pay up.
Thirty of the gang members had been arrested, but the three nabbed in South Africa had evaded the Indian police and fled to Mozambique in June 2005. "For the past six months we have hunted all the cities in South Africa until their arrest last week," said Naidoo.
