The Ahmedabad police have arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in a four-year old kidney transplant racket.
According to police, the accused, Vinod Patel of Nadiad and his accomplice, Girish Soni, had been enticing gullible persons into donating their kidneys for huge amount of money, since 2002.
The city police's crime branch arrested the two on Thursday after being tipped off by one of the victims, Suresh Patel of Ahmedabad.
Suresh told police that the duo promised to pay him three lakhs of rupees, but was paid nothing for a kidney that he donated to a person in October 2006.
Police investigation in the case revealed that the duo had even forged documents to present Suresh as the recipient's relative.
"The duo was involved in the kidney racket for long. The investigation is on and through investigation only, the number of cases that they were involved into will be revealed," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) H.R Muliyana.
"They usually used to give around 80,000 to 90,000 rupees to the donor but charged huge amount from the recipient patient which is yet to be revealed through further investigation," Muliyana added.
The two accused have been booked under the Organ Transplantation Act and have been charged of cheating and forgery.
