Kirpans of Sikh passengers onboard ANZ flight causes furore
Publish Date : 1/29/2007 8:38:00 AM   Source : Culture and Community News ExpressNewsline.com

Five Sikh priests carried their kirpans onboard an Air New Zealand flight today, triggering panic among passengers who complained to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that promptly launched a probe.

The Sikh passengers were allowed to board the flight carrying their ceremonial daggers, the official radio New Zealand said.

Worried passengers on the flight from Auckland to Napier raised the alarm when they saw the daggers sticking out from the passengers' traditional robes. The weapons were confiscated by the pilot and locked away during the flight, the radio said.

"Although it appears the priests had no unlawful intent, the CAA has to established what happened. The CAA have also been assessing the law that allows passengers not to be screened when travelling on smaller aircraft, CAA spokesperson Emma Peel said.

The passengers did not pass through a security gate before boarding the plane, which is a normal practice on flights with fewer than 90 seats, it said.

One of the Sikh passengers Jarnail Singh said he has never had problems with carrying his dagger on flights before and felt the lady who complained was being racist.

Singh said he understood why some people may have been concerned and will check in his dagger with his baggage from now on, the radio said.
