An all-party delegation from Jharkhand led by Chief Minister Madhu Kora today met the Delimitation Commission and objected to any reduction in the number of assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Castes.
In a memorandum to the Commission Chairman Justice (Retd) Kuldeep Singh, the delegation said the proposal for reduction of ST assembly seats from 28 to 21 and Lok Sabha seats from five to four "will adversely affect ST representation".
Jharkhand has 81 assembly seats and 14 Lok Sabha constituencies.
The delegation, which comprised MPs and MLAs from JD(U), BJP, Congress and JMM, said the matter has been viewed "very seriously" by the Tribal Advisory Council, a statutory body, at Ranchi on Tuesday.
"Tribals should not be deprived of the existing seats reserved for them. Instead of downsizing the reserved ST seats, efforts should be made to increase the strength of the assembly like Uttarakhand," the Chief Minister, who also met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil here, said.
The Jharkhand assembly had passed a unanimous resolution in 2005 during Arjun Munda rule to increase the House strength to 120.
Kora said Scheduled Tribes account for over one-fourth of the state's population and "such a move is likely to stoke large scale socio-political unrest. This will have far reaching adverse impact not only on the state's socio- economic development and harmony but also on the national economy".
