Uzbekistan's forces regain control of border town

Government forces in Uzbekistan Thursday claimed control of the border town of Kara-Su where protesters had occupied municipal and police offices last week, reports Xinhua.
Uzbek border guards were seen on the bridge linking Kara-Su with Kyrgyzstan and some people said around 200 troops had taken control of the town.
Witnesses said that authorities also arrested several leaders of the protesters but no shots were heard in Kara-Su, which was divided into two parts after the collapse of the Soviet Union - one belonging to Kyrgyzstan and the other to Uzbekistan.
In Uzbekistan, thousands of armed protesters had plunged the city of Andijan into chaos last Friday, releasing prisoners and clashing with security forces. Refugees fleeing Andijan began flowing into Kara-Su Saturday in the hope of crossing into neighbouring Kyrgyzstan. Hundreds of local residents had captured government buildings in Kara-Su and set ablaze police stations.
