Bihar will take a leap into e-governance when the state capital is directly linked through video- conferencing with nine divisional headquarters by the end of this month.
State Chief Secretary K.A.H. Subramanian said Tuesday the facility, to be formally launched May 25, will be extended to district headquarters of 37 districts of the state from May 31.
He said video-conferencing would help the top brass of the state administration keep in touch. The facility would also allow regular feedback from the district magistrates about day-to-day developments related to government schemes.
The cost of setting up the facility at the state capital and divisional headquarters would be Rs.15 million. For linking each district with the state headquarters it would cost Rs.1.5 million.
The infrastructure for the facility is being set up by state-owned NICNET (National Informatics Centre Network).
The previous state government headed by chief minister Rabri Devi had brought several departments online and launched an official web site of the state. She had announced last year that 9,000 village councils in the state would be computerised. The chief minister's husband Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has often rubbished IT as a "tool of the elite".
