The 1,450 MW power generating facility on the Sardar Sarovar Dam was today dedicated to the nation by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a function that was boycotted by former Congress chief ministers.
The controversial dam's height reached the 121.92-meter mark on December 31 last year, two decades after its construction began. With the push of a button by Modi, the power generation capactiy reached its optimum 1,450 MW level at full load.
Speaking at a public function at the dam site here, Modi asked the Congress-led government at the Centre to "waive the interest on loans taken for the project".
"If the Centre waives the interest on loans taken to complete the project, I assure each paise thereby saved will be spent for the benefit of adivasis in this region," he said.
The function was boycotted by four former Congress chief ministers, including Union Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela. Keshubhai Patel and Suresh Mehta, former BJP chief ministers and known Modi detractors, said they could not attend the function due to other engagements.
Vaghela termed the event a "self-publicity excercise by Modi".
The dam's riverbed powerhouse -- with an installed capacity of 1200 MW and six generation sets of 200 MW each -- is one of the country's biggest underground installations.
