Cashing in on their midfield dominance, Sao Paulo Football Club of Brazil beat city giant Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the third of the five-match Super Soccer series at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.
Sao Paulo went ahead in the 27th minute following a free kick taken by their medio Marco Antonio in the 27th minute while defender Flavio found the target with a fine header in the 75th minute.
Compared to two earlier matches where Sao Paulo drubbed two other top football clubs in the city, Mohammedan Sporting by 6-0 in the first match and then East Bengal by 3-0 in the next one, the Brazilians faced a stiff resistance from the stubborn Mohun Bagan defence.
The match could have been tougher one for the visitors but for Mohun Bagan striker Baichung Bhutia who had to leave the ground after he was shown red card by refere S Suresh three minutes before the breather.
Bhutia got the booking after both he and Sao Paulo defender Flavio fell down following a tackle and Bhutia pushed the former off the ball.
Bagan coach Robson Mattos said "I got dissapointed when we lost one of our most polished players and we had to play with one man less.
"I don't know what actually happened, I saw him losing his cool. However, he is a national hero and should not have done this".
