The security in Pakistan's Sindh province has been put on high-alert after suicide bomb attacks in Islamabad and Peshawar that killed 16 people.
The provincial government has enforced unprecedented security measures for Ashura, a major religious occasion for the Shia Muslims, with more than 16,000 personnel of police and rangers deputed in Karachi, a senior official said today.
Sindh Home Secretary Ghulam Mohtaram told mediapersons that around 15,000 law enforcement personnel have also been deputed in the cities of Hyderabad and Sukkur to prevent any untoward incident.
Pakistan's business hub Karachi has been the scene of sectarian violence in the past. Mohtaram said the police had creditable intelligence reports about terrorist strikes after the suicide attacks in Islamabad and Peshawar.
"We are taking all possible measures to ensure nothing goes wrong. The security steps will cause some inconvenience to the public but it is being done for their safety," Mohtaram said.
Meanwhile, the preliminary investigation in the Marriot hotel suicide bombing last Friday has shown that the banned militant group Al Furqan may have been involved. Mohtaram said a sketch of the killed bomber showed him to be from Uzbekistan.
