Sensex ends at record high; up 73 pts as metal stocks rally

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex surged by 73 points to close at a record high of 14,129.64 points on aggressive buying by funds along with short-covering in several blue-chip stocks.
The 30-share index, which had gained 425.82 points on Friday, shot up by another 73.11 points to close at a new high of 14,129.64 points after hitting an intra-session record of 14,202.12 points in early trade on brisk buying by funds.
In likewise fashion, the second wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty, ended 25.95 points higher at 4,078.40 after touching an intra-day high of 4,099.65.
Market observers said the sentiment was bolstered by strong FII activity. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) reported inflows of Rs 397 crore (provisional) in the cash and Rs 1,649 crore in the derivatives on January 12.
They said firming global markets too had its impact on the trading sentiments here.
Major support came from stocks like Reliance Industries, Reliance Energy, Larsen and Toubro, HDFC Bank, Infosys Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, BHEL, Tata Steel, Gujarat Ambuja Cement, ACC and Bajaj Auto.
