Supreme Court verdict tomorrow on Sidhu's plea seeking stay of conviction

The Supreme Court will pronounce tomorrow its verdict on cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's plea seeking stay of his conviction in a road rage death case to enable him to contest the bypoll for Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.
The judgement will be delivered by a Bench comprising Justice G P Mathur and Justice R V Raveendran which had on January 18 reserved its order after hearing arguments from the prosecution and the defence.
While senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the former cricketer, had contended that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had convicted him on erroneous consideration, the complainant and Punjab government maintained that the conviction cannot be stayed merely on the ground that it was coming in the way of the accused from contesting the by-poll.
Sidhu was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment for the offence of culpabale homicide not amounting to murder for the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in 1988 in Patiala.
Salve had contended that the incident dates back when Sidhu was a cricketer and he entered public life in 2004 and his conduct as a public person has been good.
The former cricketer was granted bail by the apex court after he had surrendered before a Patiala court.
