Thailand will add to the international flavour of the fortnight-long world-class fair that will be thrown open to visitors by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi from tomorrow at the banks of famous Surajkund lake here.
The 21st Surajkund Crafts Mela, a joint venture of Union Ministries of Tourism and Textiles and Haryana Tourism has occupied prominence and pride of place in the international tourism calendar.
In 2006, the Tourism ministry invited craftsmen from Afghanistan to give the desi fair an international flavour. Keeping the tradition alive, this year artisans from Thailand and SAARC countries will participate in the event to showcase their traditional handicrafts and share a platform for interaction with their Indian counterparts.
Thailand has put up seven stalls at the fair with nine artisans displaying their skills in handicrafts, flower and candle-making, costume jewellery and stone jewellery. Face masks prepared from turmeric will be another attraction at the stall section.
"The Afghan artisans had a record bumper sale at the Surajkund Crafts Mela last year, which speaks for itself how much their handicrafts were admired in India," Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Amitabh Kant told reporters here.
Last year, nearly 9,606 foreign tourists visited the fair and this year the expected influx can reach a figure of 15,000, he added.
