Six Man Football is a version of football played throughout West Texas in high schools too small to sustain a regular football program. The schools are so small that even non-athletes, the scrawny or overweight kids, are welcomed with open arms and not treated any differently from their more athletically gifted teammates. The same ethos applies to the cheerleaders.

In many ways, Six Man Football harks back to simpler times, before the massive commercialization of sports, before companies spent $30 million on a 30 second commercial.

As Ron Hann writes "Traveling to the small desert towns amid the mountains of far West Texas is in some ways a step back into a more simple time. People treat each other, and strangers, with an open friendliness. There's very little going on in these towns and the high school football games take center stage. It's hard not to feel a buzz of anticipation driving on an empty road toward a set of floodlights burning in the desert night. The game is fast and high scoring. There's a "slaughter rule" which states that if at half-time or at any time in the second half one team leads another by forty five points or more, the game is over to save the losing team further humiliation."

In Rob Hann's remarkable photo essay, shot in rural Texas, the faces and landscapes of Six Man Football draw a stark contrast with the spectacle of the superbowl, showing us another side of American Football.
