Decline in agri production, matter of concern: Murthy

Infosys Chief Mentor N R Narayana Murthy today said decline in agricultural production in the country since 1995 poses a "big concern", which needs to be immediately addressed.
"While progress made by the economy and the business over the past decade is outstanding, we have taken our eyes off the critical agriculture sector, which is the only source of income for over 65 per cent of Indians", he said.
Murthy said India already had a low per capita income and with agricultural income declining, it leaves around 650 million people in the country with less than a dollar a day.
Even in the area of fertilisers, which the government subsidises to the extent of USD eight billion a year, there needs to be a balance between right kind and mixture of nutrients and soil conservation, he said.
Murthy was speaking at a function of Ashoka Innovators for the Public, a global organisation, in which 63 leading social entrepreneurs across Asia were inducted as fellows.
Magsaysay Awardee Arvind Kejriwal was felicitated by Murthy for his relentless campaign against corruption using the Right to Information Act.
