Japan PM's approval ratings decline

Public support for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dipped to a low of 40 per cent, almost 25 percentage points down from when he first took office, a new poll showed.
The Kyodo News survey also said that three quarters of respondents expressed dissatisfaction over Abe's handling of a series of gaffes by his cabinet ministers recently, highlighting the decreasing confidence the Japanese public had in the 52-year-old premier's leadership.
Health Minister Hakuo Yanagisawa fared even worst in the public poll, with 58.7 per cent saying they want him to resign for having described women as 'child bearing machines' in a recent speech.
The poll was conducted nationwide by telephone over the weekend after the ruling and opposition parties wrangled in Parliament last week over Yanagisawa's remarks, with the opposition boycotting Diet deliberations on a supplementary budget and demanding the minister's resignation.
Almost 75 per cent of respondents felt that Abe failed to handle the controversies that stemmed from Yanagisawa's gaffe, as well as Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma's criticism of the United States.
The survey included 1,486 households with eligible voters and received valid responses from 1,053 people.
