NHRC must respond to people's aspirations: Verma

National Human Rights Commission should respond to people's aspirations and change accordingly, its former chairman Justice J S Verma said today.
There is a huge need to follow up the recommendations made by the civil society and Commission itself which would help in radically changing the human rights body, he said at a seminar on strengthening the Commission.
The three-day long seminar, which ended today, was attended by over 50 human rights activists associated with the NHRC and the state human rights commissions.
NHRC member Justice R S Kalha, who was also present, said there are many changes afoot at the Commission itself and it has decided to go to the people in various states.
"We acknowledge the fact that a change is required in the attitude of the implementing agencies and without their support NHRC can hardly work," Kalha said.
Later, a small group was formed to finalise the recommendations adopted during the three-day seminar and bring the reform on the agenda of the NHRC and the Central government.
