Sri Lanka's first budget airline aborts maiden take off

Sri Lanka's first budget airline ran into a rocky start when its maiden test flight to India was grounded today due to technical problems, airline officials said.
The airline, known as Mihin Air, chartered a Fokker-27 plane from a private airline here to prove that it was fit to operate a passenger service using that type of aircraft.
The scheduled take off from the Bandaranaike International Airport to Thiruvananthapuram, the shortest international destination from Sri lanka, was delayed for five hours before the flight was called off, an airport spokesman said.
He said a problem with the nose wheel was delaying the take off and the aircraft had to be taken out of the runway to carry out repairs.
Mihin Air does not own a single aircraft, but plans to fly to Indian destinations as well as the Middle east after obtaining clearances from local and regional civil aviation authorities.
The Sri Lankan government is funding the new budget airline to compete with its national carrier Sri Lanka which is partly owned and fully managed by Emirates airline of Dubai.
