At least five people were killed and four others injured in two blasts that rocked two illegal fireworks factories in central China's Henan Province, officials said today.
The explosions at two separate workshops yesterday in Biyang County also destroyed seven houses, officials said.
An explosion at a workshop in Fengcun village last morning killed one person and injured three. A few hours later, another blast tore through a workshop in the village of Guoji, killing four and leaving one injured, Xinhua news agency reported.
Work safety officials and police have started to investigate the causes of the two blasts. Preliminary investigations have found that both workshops were operating without licenses.
Last January, an explosion at a fireworks factory in Linzhou City, also in Henan Province, claimed 36 lives.
Fireworks form a major part of the celebrations of the upcoming Lunar New Year, the major festival for Chinese people. This year, it falls on February 18.
