As prisons in the UK are reportedly running packed beyond capacity, British Home Secretary John Reid has reportedly urged the judges to send only the most dangerous criminals to jails.
The Home Secretary is likely to send a letter to the courts outlining the crisis, reported The Sun today.
The letter says that only the most violent or dangerous criminals should be given a custodial sentence. Magistrates are also being urged to bail all but the most serious suspects, added the paper.
The plea to judges is the latest disaster for under-fire Reid. It has also raised the nightmare of more violent lags being released early to ease the problem.
The letter, signed by John Reid, Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer and Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, is the first in a series of drastic steps likely over the next few weeks.
On Monday alone, nearly 300 more prisoners were sent down by courts then released, pushing the jail numbers to almost 80,000.
Reacting to Reid's likely move, shadow home secretary David Davis last night said: "It is outrageous that sentences are being dictated by the prison capacity. Yet again, the public is at risk by the failure of ministers."
