Parliament attack convict Mohd Afzal is not the only prisoner in Tihar Jails here facing the gallows, there are nine others who face execution.
Most of the prisoners have moved mercy petition before the President which is pending while some of them have filed Special Leave Petitions either in Delhi High Court or in Supreme Court, official sources told PTI.
Afzal was given the death penalty on December 12, 2002 by a local court and upheld by the Supreme Court last year. His mercy petition is pending before the President.
Convict in Tandoor murder case Sushil Sharma was given capital punishment on November 7, 2003. He has moved the Delhi High Court challenging the punishment and the matter is pending before the court.
Red Fort shoot out case convict Mohd Arif, who was sentenced to death penalty on October 10, 2005, has also moved the Delhi High Court against the verdict.
Similarly, Devender Pal Singh was awarded capital punishment on August 25, 2001. His mercy petition is pending before the President.
Another prisoner Atabir is facing the death sentence. He has moved the apex court with a SLP. The court has granted stay on the penalty. He was sentenced on September 10, 2004.
Mohd. Hussain, who was convicted and awarded death penalty on November 3, 2004, has moved SLP before the apex court.
Inspector R P Tyagi was sentenced to death on December 15, 2006 in a custodial death case. The confirmation of the penalty is pending before the Delhi High Court. Zameel Ahmed and Dilshad, who were given death sentence on May 25, 2006 have moved the Delhi High Court to challenge the penalty. Another convicty S K Singh, who was awarded capital punishment on October 17, 2006, has filed SLP before the apex court.
"All these people are waiting for the decision," the sources said.
Besides death convicts, there are 864 convicts, including 25 female prisoners, facing life sentence in the jail.
