Strong earthquake jolts Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale today jolted an uninhabited area between Qinghai Province and Tibet in southwest China but there is no immediate report of casualty or damage, officials said.
The temblor occurred at 9:49 am (9:19 IST) in an area between Haixi Mongolian-Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Qinghai Province and Nagqu area in Tibet autonomous region.
There were no reports of casualties since the area is a no-man's land, deputy head of the Qinghai seismological bureau, Ren Tiesheng said.
The Qinghai-Tibet railway line, oil pipes and optical fibre cables in the area were not damaged in the earthquake, a local official said.
The China earthquake observation network located the epicentre of the quake at 90.7 degrees longitude east and 33.3 degrees latitude north.
