Left sees red over inflation; seeks ban on foodgrain futures trading
Publish Date : 1/20/2007 8:05:00 AM   Source : South Asia News ExpressNewsline.com

With inflation touching a two-year high, the government came under fire from BJP as well as the Left Parties, with CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat asking the Congress-led government to stop futures trading in foodgrains and reduce prices of petrol and diesel.

BJP attributed the rise in the inflation graph to 6.12 to the government's "mishandling" of the economy and charged the UPA with "abject failure on the economic front".

Karat's statement came close on the heels of the party's Central Committee meeting earlier this month asking for a check on open entry to private players in the grain trade and strengthen the public distribution system.

"The government should also bring down the prices of petrol and diesel" in the backdrop of reduction in global crude prices, Karat said, adding that the party's views have already been conveyed to the government.

The CPI(M) has decided to once again raise the demand for more reduction in petro-products prices saying that the recent decrease of Rs two and Rs one in petrol and diesel prices was "not adequate".

BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar dubbed the high inflation as "a great betrayal" of the common man.

Defending the government, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the party and the government were always concerned about such a situation and therefore monitor the economy constantly.

Suggesting that some fiscal and non-fiscal measures would be taken to tackle the situation, he said "give the government some more days".
