A Brahmin candidate has been allegedly appointed a sweeper in Madhya Pradesh, in what is being seen as a glaring irregularity in reserved category appointments.
Brahmins are considered upper caste and fall in the "general category" while the sweeper's post to which the appointment was made in Peepal Kheda village of Vidisha district was reserved for socially marginalised people.
"There have been irregularities in the appointment of sanitary workers for a long time but the authorities have always been denying it. This time we have proof. How could a Brahmin, Pradeep Sharma, be appointed as a sanitary worker?" asked Raj Bahadur Goud, president of the Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe Welfare Association.
Goud, who has complained about this to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, told IANS: "As many as 19 of the 30 posts of sanitary workers reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been filled by candidates belonging to the general category without the posts being advertised."
Chief Medical Officer K.D. Dubey refuted the allegation. "There was no need to advertise the posts since all the appointments were on compassionate grounds." Compassionate appointments are made for the kin of people who die on duty.
On the appointment of a Brahmin to the post of a sanitary worker, he said he would get it checked.
