UK teens can soon learn Urdu, Bengali or Mandarin

Schoolgoing British teenagers will soon have the option to learn languages like Urdu, Bengali or Mandarin, widely seen as more useful than French or German in the emerging global economy.
Under a planned reform of the national curriculum, 11 to 14-year-olds will be required to study a foreign language and they will have Mandarin, Arabic, Urdu or Bengali to choose from, the Sunday Times said, quoting a proposal by education secretary Alan Johnson.
Johnson is to propose tomorrow to the government scrapping the requirement for state school pupils to study a European language.
An education adviser told the paper the government wanted to start a national debate about which languages are the most important. "There are lots of European Union languages, and schools also want to teach Mandarin and Arabic," he said.
Climate change, the slave trade, the British empire and Holocaust and new classes in cookery will be a part of the changes to be introduced from 2008.
In 2004 the government ended the compulsory study of European languages for pupils aged 14 to 16. Two-thirds of state schools no longer insist on them taking a language over that age, the paper said.
