Sino-Sri Lankan relations have entered a new stage of comprehensive cooperation, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here today, a day after the two sides inked eight agreements to cement their friendship.
The two countries should "take the opportunity to consolidate traditional friendship and promote mutually beneficial cooperation," Wen said while meeting with visiting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, who is here to mark the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.
The Chinese Premier called for more reciprocal investments and cooperation in areas like agriculture, fishery, tourism, infrastructure and energy.
Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo held a separate meeting with Rajapakse today in the capital, pledging further parliamentary exchanges to facilitate result-oriented trade cooperation and better bilateral relations, Xinhua news agency reported.
The two countries signed eight agreements on economic cooperation, investment, movies, agriculture and eye cornea donation after Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Rajapakse yesterday.
Rajapakse, on his first visit to China since taking office, vowed to enhance bilateral ties.
The Sri Lankan president presented two eye corneas, a replica of a Buddha statue and a five-year-old male elephant to China.
Besides Beijing, Rajapakse will also visit Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hubei.
