French President Jacques Chirac named Dominique de Villepin as the new prime minister Tuesday, two days after voters rejected the European Union (EU) constitution in a referendum, reports Xinhua.
Chirac earlier accepted Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin's resignation.
The 51-year-old Villepin, who had until now been France's interior minister, will be in charge of forming a new government.
Chirac and Villepin did not immediately name a government. The new line-up is expected only by Wednesday.
Raffarin, 56, was widely expected to leave office after the Sunday referendum.
