Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Saturday vowed stern action against employment agencies that cheat job seekers to the Gulf.
Chandy was speaking at a seminar "NRIs and Development" organised by the state information and public relations department here.
"After visiting UAE, I found there are no problems from the Dubai labour department at all. The ministry there is considerate. All the problems are created by certain recruiting agents here who cheat people," he later told IANS.
Chandy said the state government was soon going to rein in such employment agents.
"We have finalised a special NRI (Non-Resident Indian) cell in the police. It would be headed by a superintendent of police and would have enough manpower to deal with complaints of recruitments in the Gulf," Chandy said.
"Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs Jagdish Tytler has promised all help to see that the licence of agents who do not practise business in the manner it should be done would be cancelled."
Tytler was the chief guest at the seminar.
Chandy said the proposed visit by an all-party delegation of legislators to the UAE had been postponed to August.
"They were supposed to visit labour camps in the UAE. The visit has been postponed because the assembly is meeting in the beginning of July."
