US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice begins a visit to Palestine and Israel June 18 to give a push to the Middle East peace process, reports Xinhua.
Two senior US officials will visit the West Bank to pave the way for Rice's visit, Palestinian official sources said Sunday.
US Deputy National Security Advisor Eliot Abrams and Deputy Secretary of State for Near East David Welch would arrive in Ramallah Tuesday to meet officials for discussions over the agenda of Rice's visit.
The two US officials will also hold talks with both Israelis and Palestinians to iron out differences on the proposed Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the northern West Bank, added the sources.
Under the "disengagement plan", due to be launched in mid-August, Israel will pullout more than 8,500 settlers living in 21 settlements as well as troops from the Gaza Strip that was occupied by Israel in the 1967 war.
Rice's visit comes just days before a second summit between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon slated for June 21.
The two leaders met Feb. 8 at the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and agreed on a ceasefire to halt the more than four-year-old violence.
