EU team on surprise Iraq visit

A European Union (EU) delegation arrived here Thursday on a surprise visit for discussions on a forthcoming conference on the reconstruction effort in post-war Iraq, reports Xinhua.
The delegation headed by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana also included British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.
The delegation held talks with Iraqi President Jalal al-Talabani over the arrangements for the forthcoming US-backed conference to be held in Brussels June 22-23.
"President Talabani confirmed that Iraq would send a 40-member delegation to the conference including senior government ministers," a spokeswoman in the president's office said.
The meet will bring together representatives from Iraq, the US, Russia, the EU and Japan to discuss reconstruction and developments in post-war Iraq.
