Afghanistan to fight violence against women

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has authorised the formation of a ministerial task force to eliminate violence against women, reports Xinhua.
"President Karzai signed a decree Monday that will authorise the creation of a new inter-ministerial task force to eliminate violence against women," Ariane Quantier, spokesperson of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, told reporters here Thursday.
The step has been taken in the backdrop of increasing violence against women, such as forced marriage, child marriage and physical abuse.
Dozens of women and girls, according to media reports, have committed suicides due to abuse since last year.
The task force, Quantier said, would include representatives from the Supreme Court, attorney general's office, human rights commission and several ministries.
Karzai had earlier empowered women to assume key posts in the government and contest the presidential and parliamentary elections.
