Iran-EU to have energy cooperation
Publish Date : 6/1/2005 2:19:00 PM Source : Middle East News
Iran and the European Union will establish three working committees in June to enhance cooperation in energy, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
"The committees will deal with infrastructure activities in the energy sector, fuel conservation and air transportation", Mohammad Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian, deputy oil minister for international affairs, said here.
Nejad-Hosseinian led a delegation to the Belgium capital Brussels for the first OPEC-EU joint session held May 26 with the aim of boosting energy and transport cooperation between the two sides.
He said liquefied natural gas (LNG) transfer from Iran's Assaluyeh to Europe was among the issues discussed. The EU is scouting for investment in the energy sector to meet increasing demand.
Nejad-Hosseinian said Iran had proposed to the EU to invest in its downstream oil sector, so they could replace their investments with purchase of crude and natural gas from Iran. The minister said British Gas had shown interest to participate in Iran's LNG projects.
"The British Gas Company is seeking participation in LNG projects of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), however, there are disputes on the shares held by each company", he said. British Gas was willing to hold 40-50 percent shares, which is not acceptable to Iran, he said, adding, "We proposed the company to establish a new LNG unit instead of taking part in the NIOC's LNG projects, as the Dutch firm Shell and French Total have done." Nejad-Hosseinian also said that British Gas had voiced its readiness to establish Iran-Kuwait gas pipeline.
