New Zealand is mulling all options including a possible legal fight against Japan's plan to kill endangered humpback whales, Xinhua reports.
The NZPA news agency quoted Conservation Minister Chris Carter as saying that the Japanese wanted to add 80 humpback and fin whales each to its legal kill lists.
At the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meet in South Korea in June, Japan was planning to seek doubling its kill of about 440 minke whales a year for so-called scientific purposes and also add humpback and fin whales to the list.
Carter, who is to attend the IWC meeting, said New Zealand was fighting the proposal on a number of counts, and taking a case to the World Court was one option but factors such as the cost and chance of success had to be taken into account.
The Australian government has stopped short of supporting moves by environment groups to try to prevent Japanese whaling ships from entering the Australian whale sanctuary in Antarctic waters.
Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said only words were not enough to stop Japan's plans for the slaughter and the New Zealand government "must take serious action against Japan".
"The humpback whale was almost hunted into extinction. We cannot allow it to become a target for Japanese harpoon guns," she said.
