Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar Saturday drew flak from his constituency in Tamil Nadu for failure to stop the Indian oil Corp's truck with the new owner of Union Carbide - Dow Chemical.
Indian Oil (IOC), a state oil company, has entered into an agreement with the US multinational Dow to source Union Carbide's technology for mono-ethylene glycol production at its naphtha refinery in Panipat, Haryana.
A Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, was responsible for a gas leak that killed 20,000 people in 1984.
Bhopal's chief judicial magistrate declared Union Carbide an "absconder" in 1992 after it repeatedly failed to honour summons by the Indian court.
The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal and its supporters Saturday launched a nation-wide boycott of IOC, calling for the company to give up plans to do business with Union Carbide and its new owner.
The protestors demonstrated in Mani Shankar Aiyar's constituency, Mayiladuthurai, about 300 km south of Chennai, for his failure to cancel the IOC deal and blacklist Dow Chemical.
Dow, however, maintains that it does not recognise the Indian court's criminal jurisdiction over Union Carbide.
