How does one translate a red striped super smooth razor into trendy clothes? Perhaps one needs to have both the vigour of young Nikhil and Shantanu Mehra and their vivacious talent to turn out stunning leather jackets, jumpers and micro hipsters, all inspired by a razor.
In a splashy start to a whole new season of fashion in the capital, brothers Mehra showed off an uber-soft leather line that captured the essence of why they are one of Indian fashion's brightest new hopes.
Joining hands with male grooming major, the Boston-based Gillette, Shantanu and Nikhil created a collection drawn from the new Mach 3 Turbo Champion, which itself is inspired by the spirit of motor sports.
The collection was showcased Wednesday night at The Grand hotel.
With an overwhelming emphasis on red, almost the anthem colour of Formula One racing, the collection turned out zippered jackets, bustier-hot pant combos, coloured dresses, pants with sporty stripping detailing and biker jackets in various shades.
"We wanted to create a fun, powerful line," said Nikhil Mehra, who represented the duo at the event, with Shantanu in the US.
Taking off from the product, the collection, displayed to confetti cloudbursts and uncorking of champagne, interpreted the black and red razor body as interweave of colour schemes on the body of the jackets and the pants.
Very structured and form fitting, it was easy to see the duo highlighting bits and hints of what their fall winter look might eventually carry. There was a strong male emphasis that gave the collection a solid feel, keep away any dash of swishy-ness.
There was also a unique dab of surface texturing in the use of rapidly running stitch lines crisscrossing each other to give a sense of rapid fire power and speed that epitomises motor sport and defines the youthful feel of the razor and the clothes.
Brothers Mehra who are also doing Amitabh Bachchan's clothes for Kaun Benga Crorepati 2 have always made fine, young clothes - and now they've proved that they can do razor sharp too.
