Jindal inks pact for steel plant in Orissa

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL), India's largest maker of stainless steel, Thursday signed an agreement with the Orissa government for setting up a 1.6-million tonne steel plant and a 500Mw power plant in the state.



N.C. Mathur, director of JSL, and state Steel and Mines Secretary Bhaskar Chaterjee signed the memorandum of understanding in the state secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and JSL managing director Ratan Jindal.

The project, to be set up in phases at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district, is estimated to cost about Rs.70 billion. It will give direct employment to about 2000 people and indirect employment to over 8000 people, an official said.

The plant will be spread over 1,240 acres and the company has acquired land for both the steel project and an ash pond, he said.

The project will bring maximum value addition to minerals in Orissa like iron, chrome and manganese ore, Jindal told reporters.

"We are pleased to be in Orissa and look forward to working here," he said.
