State-run carrier Indian Airlines Monday gave its in-principle approval for converting five of its Boeing aircraft into freighters.
With air cargo traffic expected to outpace passenger traffic growth in the next two decades, the Indian Airlines board decided to optimally utilise the five B-737s for dedicated freighter operations.
The five Boeing aircraft, currently being operated by Indian Airlines' subsidiary Alliance Air, are expected to be available for cargo operations by the end of 2005 when Alliance Air inducts Airbus A-319 aircraft on lease for its winter schedule.
"The Rs.25 billion air express cargo market is seeing a 20 percent growth year-on-year. This is a growing market that Indian Airlines plans to enter and expand over the next few years," an airlines statement said here.
The five aircraft will operate on the hub and spoke pattern with timings that would suit the express cargo market.
The service will cater to six major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, with Nagpur as the hub.
The dedicated freighter operations will enable Indian Airlines to service the courier market even at the retail end, offering a reliable, 24x7, door-to-door, value for money product," the statement said.
