Four people, including two relatives of Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda, were killed and 50 injured when a bus fell into a dry river-bed at Khunti, 35 km from here.
The bus bound for Chaibasa, about 150 km south of here in West Singbhum district, careened off the bridge and plunged into the Tajna river Monday.
"It is a case of negligence on the part of the driver. Eyewitnesses said the bus was travelling at high speed," said Khunti Deputy Superintendent of Police Madhusudan Bari.
The exact identity of the chief minister's relatives could not be immediately established.
Owing to the summer, the river was dry and the surface was covered with rocks. Bari said there was an explosion after the bus hit the rocks. The condition of 20 is said to be critical.
Police sources said the toll could rise further as some passengers may still be trapped in the vehicle. Cranes have been passed into service to pull out the bus and assist in the rescue operations.
