Home Minister Shivraj Patil Tuesday gave the Tamil Nadu government a clean chit on the activities of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels in the state.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha had last week protested the central government's report on renewed activities of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the state.
But Patil declared that "neither the Tamil Nadu government nor any political party in the state is encouraging LTTE activities".
"There is no presence of anybody (LTTE) and if there is, it does not mean that it is an encouragement," Patil told reporters on the sidelines of the 23rd Southern Zonal Council meeting here.
"No leader in your state is encouraging (the LTTE) and if somebody is hiding, we shall have to live with the realities of life."
This is the second time that Patil has clarified that the home ministry's report was not intended against the state government.
"The government (Tamil Nadu) has taken some action," he said.
Patil also promised central support to modernise police forces in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to fight Maoist rebels.
He said Maoist activity in the southern states had "declined only by four percent which wasn't very encouraging".
Jayalalitha sought more central assistance to contain Maoists in her state's Dharmapuri and Erode districts.
