Former Nepal prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who has been charged with corruption in an alleged multimillion-dollar drinking water scam, was Tuesday asked to pay Nepali Rs.5 million as bail or stay in prison.
The Royal Commission for Corruption Control, which is hearing his case, told Deuba, his former minister for physical planning and works Prakash Man Singh and four others they could remain outside prison during the trial if they paid Nepali Rs.5 million each as bail.
The four others are senior bureaucrats Tika Dutta Niraula, Dhurba Bahadur Shrestha and Deepak Kumar Jha and contractor Jip Chirring Lama.
Deuba, Singh and the bureaucrats were charged with irregularly in awarding a contract to Lama in the Melamchi drinking water project funded by the Asian Development Bank, World Bank and other donors.
They were accused of giving the contract to Lama, who belongs to Deuba's Nepali Congress (Democratic) party, at inflated rates and causing the state a loss of over Nepali Rs.376 million.
Deuba and Singh have been under detention since last month for refusing to answer questions by the commission.
The two said the commission was formed illegally by King Gyanendra when he dismissed Deuba and assumed power Feb 1.
