Younis, Afridi opt out of Houston series
Publish Date : 6/1/2005 2:05:00 PM   Source : Sports News

Pakistan vice-captain Younis Khan and all-rounder Shahid Afridi will not appear in an Asian XI squad for a three-match one-day series organised by Cricket World International (CWI) at Houston in mid-June.

Khan and Afridi were scheduled to play for the Asian XI team alongside Indian stars like Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid against a World XI. The other Pakistani players in the Asian XI are Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Sami and Rashid Latif.

While Khan pulled out of the event at the last moment, Afridi decided against playing after failing to reach an agreement with the organisers over appearance fees, The News reported Tuesday.

It is also unclear whether middle-order batsman Yousuf Youhana will be available for the series as he left the Pakistani squad currently in the West Indies to be with his ailing father in Pakistan.

"Basically the situation is that even Yousuf Youhana is in Pakistan with his ailing father and it's not clear if he would be able to fly to Houston for the matches," a team source was quoted as saying.

Replacements for the absent players will probably be made available.

"The assistant manager is now coordinating the visas and travel arrangements with the help of Inzamam and it's likely that Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq, Arshad Khan and Yasir Hameed might fill in for the other players," the source said.

CWI is holding the matches on June 16, 18 and 19 in Houston and has also signed on Sehwag, Dravid, Anil Kumble, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Sri Lankan players Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Dilhara Fernando for the Asian squad.
