A cache of arms and ammunition has been found in a forested area along the Orissa-Jharkhand border that had witnessed a gun battle between security forces and Maoist rebels over the weekend, officials said Wednesday.
The cache, including 32 electronic detonators, several Chinese-made grenades, an AK-47 assault rifle, bullets and explosives, was found by a party of state policemen and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers, a CRPF official said.
On Sunday, a group of Maoist rebels disappeared after a gun battle with police and CRPF personnel at Saranda forest, about 20 km from the steel city of Rourkela.
Police and CRPF then launched an operation to trace the rebels and raided several places over the past few days. During these raids, the arms cache was found at Saranda forest late Tuesday night, the official told.
Maoists have attacked police posts and land owners at several places along the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border. Recently, they have extended their influence to several districts in western Orissa, including Sambalpur and Sundergarh.
During the past three months, Maoist rebels have kidnapped over a dozen people from western Orissa and released them after holding them for some days.
