A Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, on a protest fast against President Chandrika Kumaratunga's plan to enter a tsunami relief deal with Tamil Tiger rebels, Saturday gave up his fast after the president reportedly gave a positive assurance, reports Xinhua.

Omalpe Sobhitha, a parliamentarian from the JHU or Heritage Party, was admitted to a hospital for urgent medical care after six days of fasting in the central town of Kandy.

The 56-year-old Sobhitha wanted a personal guarantee from the president that she would not go ahead with the tsunami deal without approval from the Buddhist clergy, a JHU spokesman said.

One of the monks who discussed Sobhitha's deteriorating health condition with Kumaratunga Friday called on him early morning to convey that the president's assurances were acceptable to leading monks.

In the event that the president reneged, the leading monks would resort to drastic action, said the JHU spokesman.

Even as Sobhitha's fast ended, members of the Leftist JVP or the People's Liberation Front began their fast unto death in central Colombo's main railway station.

Dambara Amila of the JVP said he would fast unto death to demand that Kumaratunga abandon the joint mechanism plan.

His party has already warned that they would quit the government June 16 unless the president gives up her plan by midnight June 15.
